About Justin Brock

Short Version (Written in 3rd person to sustain an air of irony and sarcasm):
Justin Brock is a singer/songwriter from Mississippi – the kind of songwriter without any hits, albums or fans. Basically, a nobody in the music industry. In spite of this, he figures that anyone who writes songs and sings can be called a singer/songwriter.

Long Version (Written in 1st person because 3rd person takes too long and I need to finish this page):
This site is about about the unfinished music of Justin Brock . . . me. I mean unfinished in two ways.

Incomplete: I keep writing stanzas to incomplete songs, compiling songs into unrecorded albums and illustrating imaginary children’s books with the thought that one day I’ll hold something complete in my hand. But that’s probably just wishful thinking. This site is more documentary than promotional material.
Unpolished: Nothing you read or hear here will be slick and markety. I have neither the money nor the time to make it so. The songs are raw and uncut. But they are authentic and honest. Listen graciously.

Maybe something will come of what I post here. So few of our interactions with music are untainted by marketing gimmicks and slick sales promos. I prefer playing in a living room to attentive strangers – or singing on my deck with family and friends – over sitting in a recording studio in front of a mic.

There can be beauty in brokenness, honesty without symmetry, music that never ends . . . if only because the last few lines haven’t come yet. As I sing in You Can’t Have Mississippi, Sufjan Stevens: “truth, beauty, failure so often are one.”
